Tottenham made an enquiry to sign Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata on transfer deadline day, according to transfer insider Pete O’Rourke (via GiveMeSport).
The Lowdown: Spurs transfer saga
Tottenham’s attacking transfer saga began with Harry Kane last summer, when the striker informed Spurs chief Daniel Levy that he wanted to leave the club.
It was no secret that Pep Guardiola was interested in signing the England captain at the start of the summer window. Manchester City proceeded to make two bids for the player which were both rejected, the highest of which came to a staggering £125m. This has left Kane in limbo, having failed to live up to his usually high standards, with just five goals in 19 league appearances this season.
Spurs do not have any other recognised first-team strikers, but Fabio Paratici still failed to secure an out-and-out centre-forward in January, instead signing Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur on deadline day.

The Latest: Spurs asked about Morata
According to O’Rourke, it wasn’t for the want of trying that Tottenham did not add a centre-forward in January, revealing that the club made an enquiry to sign Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata on transfer deadline day.
Speaking to GiveMeSport on Monday night, the journalist said: “They did ask about Alvaro Morata today. Never say never with Spurs.”
The Verdict: Backup needed but not Morata
If Kane once again decides to push for a move in the summer, it will be imperative that Paratici secures a replacement for Tottenham’s starting XI. However, even as things stand, Spurs need more options in the centre-forward role in case anything happens to the England international.
Although Conte has previously lauded Morata as ‘a complete player’, the Atletico striker may not be the man for the job; given his experience and CV, he would unlikely settle for a place on the bench.
While it might not be the worst thing in the world that Spurs were unable to sign the Spaniard, they still lack backup for Kane, which is far from an ideal scenario but one with which they are now stuck until the summer.
