QPR left it late to earn a dramatic draw against Rotherham yesterday at the New York Stadium.
What was most remarkable about the goal was the scorer Luke Freeman, and the week that he has had.
The midfielder has been the subject of plenty of speculation over the past few months regarding his future, with a move to Middlesbrough being heavily touted. However, he signed a new deal this week to stay at Loftus Road until 2021.
This is some of the best news QPR fans could have hoped for. Very few would argue that he has not been The Rs’ best player since joining from Bristol City in 2017. In fact, no one has more assists than the 26-year-old in the Championship since he moved to London.
Yesterday was a very clear representation as to why he is so important to the team, and why it was imperative to secure his future. The futures of so many players at QPR are unclear, so they needed some security somewhere. The likes of Nahki Wells, Tomer Hemed and Geoff Cameron are all at the club on loan this season; should they leave at the end of the season, the club will find themselves slightly depleted. If Freeman were to depart at the end of the campaign as well, The Hoops could well have found themselves in a crisis.
QPR are in a good position currently in the Championship in eighth place (that could change this evening). It would have been a disaster if they were to lose their best player at the end of the campaign. Luckily, Freeman is proving that the new contract was the best business QPR could have done.
