Everton’s January transfer window could yet breathe some much needed excitement into the club.
The Toffees have already made a huge statement in the form of Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment, and it will be interesting to see how the club follow up on what was undoubtedly a major coup.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Everton have already been linked with a couple of potential new signings – including Emre Can and Jean-Michael Seri, two midfield options for them to choose from.

FootMercato claim that Ancelotti, who monitored the former Fulham player during his time at Napoli, remains interested in his services and has already made an enquiry over a potential transfer.
On the other hand, Can is also a target for Everton according to The Mirror. The report claims the Toffees are lining up a £30m bid after the Germany international, who has been told he is surplus to requirements at Juventus.
But the transfer market is still weeks away from closing and a lot can change in a short period of time, so it’s worth considering what the former Liverpool man could bring to Goodison Park.
Looking at how the two players performed in their most recent seasons in the Premier League, it’s pretty clear who Ancelotti’s priority should be.
Can outperforms Seri in terms of the final product, netting three goals and four assists for the Reds in 2017/18 as compared to his counterpart’s one goal and two assists for Fulham last season.
It has to be pointed out, however, that the current Galatasaray midfielder can boast 1.8 key passes while Juventus’ man could only tally 0.5 per game back at Anfield.
Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think…
But even though he falls short in that category, Can is still a much more well-rounded type of player, as can be seen in the remaining stats presented.
Not only was he a better dribbler with 0.9 per game compared to Seri’s 0.5, but he’s also more involved in the defensive duties, tallying 2.6 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game as opposed to his rival’s 1.3 and one per game respectively.
The other aspect we have to mention is the psychological one.
Signing a former Liverpool player would truly shake things up on Merseyside and give the Toffees a morale boost for the remainder of the season.
If Ancelotti eventually finds himself in a situation to pick between those two players, there’s only one winner he should go for.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens as the window unfolds, but a deal for Can would undoubtedly be intriguing for the dynamics between Liverpool’s two major clubs given the player’s history.
