Former owner David Moores has admitted he made a mistake when he sold Liverpool to George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
Moores, who sold the Reds to the American duo in 2007 for about £200million, has now pleaded with them to sell up as the club they lurch from one crisis to the next.
Liverpool are currently more than £350million in debut while on the pitch they could only finish seventh in the season just ended and will be playing in the Europa rather than the Champions League next term.
Confusion surrounds the building of a new stadium in Stanley Park while Gillett and Hicks announced last month that they intend to sell the club, news that was welcomed by Moores.
He said in a letter to The Times newspaper:"Don't punish the supporters any more.
"When I decided to sell the club, I was aware the game was changing beyond all recognition and deeply worried, too, about my ability to continue underwriting the financial side. The Roman Abramovich era was upon us and I knew that I could never compete.
"So sincere was our commitment to finding that person or company, that we invested huge sums and massive amounts of time investigating potential investors, only to conclude that they were not the right people for Liverpool.
"It would have been easier, I assure you, just to take the money, cross our fingers tight and hope things worked out – but we dug deep into every file and asked all the tough questions, knowing the answers might scupper any deal."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
